Improving the protection and resilience of critical energy infrastructure was the focus of a working meeting between representatives of Ukraine and the US in Krakow.

The event was attended by the Head of the Department for the Restoration of Critical Infrastructure of the Agency for Restoration Yevhen Khovailo, the Director of the Department for Critical Infrastructure Protection of the State Special Communications Service of Ukraine Valerii Novak, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Oleksandr Vіazovchenko, representatives of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine; NPC “Ukrenergo”, as well as experts from the Ukraine Task Force of the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

The participants discussed ways to strengthen the passive protection of critical energy facilities. They also explored the possibility of implementing a second level of protection, based on American technologies, at one of the substations being developed by the Agency for Restoration.

They identified priority needs for ensuring the passive protection of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that require international support or partnership participation. They agreed on further coordination of measures to protect critical energy infrastructure, as well as on expanding opportunities for financing joint projects.

The Agency for Restoration is implementing measures to protect critical infrastructure facilities in the fuel and energy sector from damage by unmanned aerial vehicles (level II) at 22 facilities and from damage by missiles (level III) at 22 facilities.
