We have started supplying water to the Mykolaiv water supply system

Mykolaiv

The construction of a main water supply system from the Pivdennyi Buh River to the city of Mykolaiv has begun an important stage: filling the system with water. It is one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects.

After the main construction and installation work is completed, it is impossible to  open the valve and start running water. Such a rush can cause a hydraulic shock – a pressure surge that can damage pipes or fittings even before operation.

To avoid this, a phased and controlled filling is carried out. Water is supplied slowly from a controlled point, displacing air from the pipes through air relief valves. The operating team constantly monitors the pressure, water flow rate and equipment operation to prevent accidents or air locks.

The system is also flushed to prevent construction dust or installation residues from entering the drinking water.

“Water is gradually being supplied through the networks. And in the second half of August it will appear in the taps of Mykolaiv residents. The water supply project for Mykolaiv is not only about the rapid supply of water to more than five hundred thousand people, what is undoubtedly important. This is a comprehensive project for the future. Because we have calculated scenarios for the cost of water pumping for Mykolaiv in order to keep the tariff for the city residents in check in the future. Energy-efficient and safety solutions have been laid down,” said the Head of the Agency for Restoration Serhii Sukhomlyn.

In total, 134.6 km of the pipeline has already been installed  which is 98% of the total length. The readiness of pumping stations is 80%.

“We managed to reduce the project cost by more than UAH 2.5 billion. These funds will be used for new water supply projects in those regions where the situation remains critical. These are water pipelines in the Dnipro, Odesa and Poltava regions,” said the Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine –  Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba.

The project is being implemented in the Mykolaiv region to eliminate the consequences of the russians’ blowing up the Dnipro-Mykolaiv water pipeline. It envisages the construction of a water intake from the Pivdennyi Buh and a water pipeline over 67 km long and consisting of 3 sections. The capacity of the water pipeline is 120,000 m³ per day for Mykolaiv and 50,000 m³ for the reclamation system of the city of Nova Odesa and Mykolaiv district. This will provide water for half a million residents of Mykolaiv and subsequently for irrigation needs.
