For the first time in Ukraine, the innovative EcoSteelAscon technology has been applied in road construction. Korean partners laid a 750-meter test section on the O100607 Zalissia – Zavorychi road in the Kyiv region.

The location was visited today by Serhii Sukhomlyn, Head of the Agency for Restoration, Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Kim Yonghyun, Executive Director of POSCO International and Seo Ohjin, President of SG.

The EcoSteelAscon technology has been used in South Korea for over a decade, proving its effectiveness. For example, in areas frequently affected by flooding after heavy rains, such issues have been eliminated thanks to this method.

Under traditional technology, crushed stone is used in the asphalt mix — a costly material that is not readily available in all regions of Ukraine, making transportation even more expensive. The Korean method replaces natural crushed stone with steel slag, a byproduct of the metallurgical industry.

This approach improves pavement durability while also reducing material costs. In addition, the technology is environmentally friendly — it involves recycling raw materials and reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

“In May, we signed a memorandum with SG, a leading asphalt concrete producer in Korea.
In Kyiv region, 750 meters were paved using Korean technology at the company’s expense, alongside 150 meters using traditional methods. Experts from our National Infrastructure Development Institute, the Kyiv Regional Administration, and SG will monitor the condition of the pavement monthly and compare durability. Once the strength is proven, we plan to scale up the use of the ESA technology,” said Serhii Sukhomlyn.
