Preventing landslides: reinforcing mountain roads with retaining walls

Chernivtsi

Emergency restoration work is underway on two key mountain routes in Chernivtsi region. During scheduled inspections of state roads, sections of the P-62 and T-26-01 highways were found to have experienced erosion of the roadbed.

To stop this process and prevent further destruction of the roads, the construction of lower retaining walls made of gabion structures has begun. These structures reinforce slopes in landslide-prone areas and protect the roadbed from further erosion.

One such structure is being built on the T-26-01 highway section: Chernivtsi – Vashkivtsi – Putyla – “Ruska” border checkpoint, with access to the “Shepit” border checkpoint. The emergency works are taking place at an altitude of 1,183 meters above sea level. To eliminate erosion of the roadbed, a 50-meter-long retaining wall is being constructed. The structure will consist of 180 gabion baskets and a brushwood lining for additional slope stabilization.

Another retaining wall is being installed on the P-62 highway on the slope of the Sudyliv descent. The artificial structure, 21 meters long and 4.5 meters high, is being built using 130 gabion baskets filled with natural stone. This type of structure is resistant to ground pressure, flexible and provides effective drainage—critical for mountain slopes.
